There are millions of dog lovers in the world, but at the same time, numerous people are afraid of them. In most cases, this fear is irrational and persistent, but it makes people feeling uncomfortable with being around dogs.
The chances of running into a dog are relatively high, as dogs are the most popular pets globally. People who are afraid of them experience symptoms even when you’re just thinking about dogs or hear barking.
A lot of people believe certain breeds are extremely dangerous, such as pit bulls. They look powerful and intimidating, so they have a fearsome, and largely unfair, reputation as dangerous dogs.
Yet, in reality, a dog is only as good or as bad as its owner. Any owner of a pit bull will confirm that if you treat a pit with kindness it will repay you with kindness in turn.
The friendly Simba is a pit bull, that lives in an apartment in Sweden with this owner, Arjanit Mehana.
A lot of their neighbors avoid the dog, simply because they are afraid of him, and a woman who lives a floor below them was especially cold to him.
Mehana says that he always tried to greet her but she looked at him with fear and called him mean, just because he was a ‘bad’ breed.”
One day, Mehana and his dog were returning home from a walk. When they passed by the door of the woman, Simba started acting strangely, barking and running to her door.
Mehana tried to pick him up and then heard a faint sound coming from inside, shouting for help.
The older woman said, ‘Please don’t go.’”
Mehana opened the door and saw her collapsed on the floor. She had broken her hip, and for two days, she had gone unnoticed, unable to move.
The dog had fortunately sensed her just in time. Mehana called for an ambulance, and her life was saved.
At this moment, everything was changed. Mehana said:
“She said, ‘Thank you for hearing me.’ I thought she was talking to me at first,” Mehana recalled. “But then she said, ‘No, not you — the nice doggie.’”
The woman is still in recovery, but Simba has been recognized as a hero by everyone in the building. Neighbors have started showering him with treats and gifts, and the dog certainly deserved them all.
The story about him saving his neighbor went viral, and Mehana adds that he intended to share some positive feedback about pit bulls with the world.
Pit bulls are dogs just like any other breed, and with a stable family/human, affection, proper nutrition, and an outlet for their boundless energy, they will behave and live like any other dog in that situation.
Mehana said:
“I have had Simba since he was 8 weeks old. Now he is 4 years old and is a happy little guy. He loves to eat Dentastix and of course what’s on my plate.
In the summer, swimming is one of the biggest favorites. Like running in the woods and playing with his dog buddies.”
“I know Simba is a wonderful dog. But I hope this event will make people see bully breeds differently. We, as human beings, must deserve their loyalty and love.”
