There is nothing quite like having a cold that moves from your sinuses down into your lungs. We have all been there. It starts out with just a few simple sneezes and a runny nose and the next thing you know you feel like someone is sitting on your chest and you are coughing up all sorts of fun stuff.
When you get a chest cold you are simply miserable. Having mucus in your lungs is quite unpleasant and makes breathing extremely difficult.
While most of us will turn to the drug store to get our favorite cough syrup for some relief, there is actually syrup that you can make at home that will help you get the mucus out of your lungs so that you feel better sooner. This syrup can even be taken by children.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon of marshmallow root
- 1 tablespoon of flaxseed
- 1 tablespoon of sage
- 1 lemon sliced
- A quart of filtered water
- A cup of pure maple syrup
Directions
Place the water in a saucepan and add in the maple syrup. Turn the stove on medium heat to preheat the syrup. When the syrup is melted, add in the rest of the ingredients and place the burner on low. Let simmer for 15 minutes and then remove it from the heat.
Strain the syrup and then place it in a mason jar. Once the syrup has cooled, take a tablespoon of it 3 times each day. The syrup should be stored in your refrigerator between uses.
You should continue to use this natural cough syrup until you feel improvement and your cough is gone.

In addition to using the cough syrup, there are several other things that you can do to help clear the mucus from your lungs. One way to help drain the mucus from your lungs is to use postural drainage. This involves moving the body in different ways to help drain the different areas of the lungs. The mucus will drain into the mouth and can be spit out.
Chest percussion is another method that can be used to help gets rid of mucus in the lungs. This involves using a cupped hand to clap the chest in different areas. This helps to move the mucus from the smaller areas of the lungs to the larger areas so that they can be coughed out.
If you have a bad cold and the homemade syrup does not help your cough and congestion after a few days it is best to see a doctor. At times a chest cold can turn into bronchitis or in severe cases pneumonia. If this happens you will need the care of a doctor in order to get better.
