A Bermuda man, who has launched an organization that inspires children to help the elderly and those in need by mowing their lawns, has found another way to help the community during the COVID-19 virus pandemic. He now delivers free meals and supplies to the ones in need in Alabama.
Lending a helping hand in hard times is praiseworthy. Especially during challenging times like these, the poor, the disabled, the unemployed, the old and sick, are of an increased need for help.
It is our moral duty to do our best and ease their living. A Bermuda man, who has lived, studied, and worked in Alabama for years, found a way to help the community.
When Rodney Smith was only fifteen, he met a senior man who was struggling to mow his lawn, and he decided to help. This encounter actually changed his life forever.
Helping the man inspired him to help other people in need as well, mainly veterans, disabled, and single moms.
Over the years, he has mowed hundreds of lawns, and eventually got the idea to launch a nation-wide organization called “Raising Man Lawn Care Services” (RMLCS).
It spreads his message and inspires young people to take the “50-yard challenge” with him.
According to its website:
“Raising Men Lawn Care Service is the union of an ordinary yard maintenance service and the commitment to establish an inspiring program to keep our youth (girls & boys) on a positive path while learning and understanding their value in society. RMLS provides free lawn care to our elders, those who are disabled, single mothers, and our veterans, who do not have the time, resources, and/or money to manicure their yards.”
Kids who decide to participate are asked to mow 50 lawns for their neighbors and people in their community.
For every 10 lawns they have mowed, the participants get a different colored t-shirt, and after lawn #500, they receive the coveted black shirt.
Over 700 kids from all 5 states have participated in the challenge. Rodney explains that the challenge is open to kids from all over the world.
The motto of the organization is “Making a difference one lawn at a time.”
Rodney explains:
„We wanted the kids to put down the video games and get out and make a difference in their community with a lawnmower. And what better way to do that than our 50-yard challenge? Every kid who’s taken part in our 50-yard challenge so far has loved doing it.”
Last summer, after months of mowing lawns, he accomplished his goal, having helped out an American hero in every single state.
Rodney wouldn’t stop due to the coronavirus pandemic either. He actually switched gears from just lawn mowing to delivering free meals and supplies to the needy, which involves the elderly, disabled, working mothers, and veterans.
The new service is called “mow and drop”, as volunteers are dropping the supplies outside of people’s doors to maintain social distancing. The funds are gathered via donations of money and supplies.
He explains:
“People have been donating money for hand sanitizer, fresh fruit, water, toilet paper, and other items for those who can’t get outside of their house.
I’m just mowing and doing what I love to do best: helping others.”
When asked about the reason for his challenge, the humble Smith explains that he is just a man on a mission from God. He is also very active on social media to popularize the movement and inspire people to join in.
The pandemic has caused a huge health and unemployment crisis, and many people are struggling to cope with its consequences, so lending a helping hand is the least we can all do to help our community.
