Boys are their mother’s little rascals, but being the only girl in the house can be a real struggle. A mother from Britain finally got a daughter after giving birth to ten sons in a row!
Alexis Brett suspected she was probably having another baby last Christmas eve, a home pregnancy test confirmed it. She and her husband David were almost sure they are having another boy but decided to get a Gender scan.
Alexis, a former nurse who retrained as a fitness instructor, said that the boys were very excited when they decided to do a little gender reveal for the family.
The parents were too nervous to open the envelope with the results, so their son Harrison did, and they were amazed when they learned that this time they were going to have to start buying pink onesies!
The brothers were fascinated, but Alexis initially thought they’d got it wrong.
She added that they barely thought it was worth finding out the gender because it was the same every time.
Alexis explained that they were shocked, but delighted. She says that it would have been just as exciting to have another son, as she loves having boys, but he was thrilled that she will not be quite so outnumbered at home anymore.
She delivered her daughter into the world on August 27 and named her Cameron after the actress Cameron Diaz. The birth of the baby marked the 16-year age difference between her and her eldest brother, 17-year-old Cambell. And then there were her other brothers, Harrison,16, Corey, 14, Lachlan, 11, Brodie, 9, Brahn, 8, Hunter, 6, Mack, 5, Blake, 3, Rothagaidh, 2.
The mother joked that they are definitely stopping now, as this time, she loves her family as it is.
Both parents noticed that the brothers have much better behaved around their baby sister. They claim the boys keep quiet not to wake her up, and want to help with holding and feeding her.
Brett explained that they were not trying for a girl throughout her many pregnancies. In fact, Cameron wasn’t planned, but she was happy all the same, and she wouldn’t mind even if it was a boy again.
She added that she is an only child in her family, and she never planned to have a large family, but she now loves it.
She also admitted having lots of fun while buying pink things for the first time.
Alexis said that they are sometimes judged for having such a large family, but they are well used to it, and they do not let such comments affect them.
They are not even qualified for full child benefits, as her husband has a good job.
Six years ago, David was diagnosed with early-onset Parkinson’s, but he is a hands-on dad, sharing the housekeeping duties and always finding time for each of the boys. His symptoms are still minor, so he controls them with medication.
He is a train driver and usually leaves the house around 5:30, leaving his wife to use the little quiet time she has in the morning for a cup of coffee and shower before the kids wake up.
Life is not easy with so many children in the house, as she has to do 49 loads of laundry a week and vacuum seven times a day, but this super mom plans to get back to work as a part-time fitness instructor in a few weeks.
The family has a seven-seater people carrier and a five-seater Range Rover, but Alexis cannot drive, so most weekends, David takes the older boys out while Alexis stays home with the younger ones.
David has to do a double journey when they want to go anywhere as a family.
The family does two big shops a week, with Alexis doing a top up shop daily, as she needs to replenish the six pints of milk and two loaves of bread the family goes through every day.
Cameron will now sleep in a crib in her parents’ bedroom, but as soon as some of her older brothers move out, she will get her own space in their five-bedroom home.
Even though the place might have become a little bit of a tighter squeeze, and they sometimes look at each other wondering ‘What have we done?’, Alexis says that she enjoys her family, and cannot imagine life with a small family now.
