Yet, can you imagine the feeling while standing above an at least 144-year-old wisteria tree there? Looking up, the blooms of this tree look like colorful spears swiping across the sky!
Venture to the Ashikaga Flower Park in Tochigi, Japan, and you will fall in love with this stunning wisteria tree that’s often referred to as “the most beautiful in the world.”
After around 15o years, the magical climbing bines keep blossoming every year from mid-April to mid-May, making the place look like a piece of heaven.
Back in 2014, the enchanting Ashikaga Flower Garden and the Great Wisteria Festival at the park got featured in CNN’s “Dream Destinations” and wisteria flower has become a top tourist attraction in spring in Japan.
The mesmerizing pink and purple blooms dangle from the aged vine trees and gently sway above the heads of tourists.
This genus of flowering plants made of woody climbing bines is native to China, Japan, Korea, and the Eastern United States. They can live as long as 1,200 years, so the one in Ashikaga has barely started its journey!
Ashikaga’s wisteria is around 150 years old, and it spreads out at approximately 1,990 square meters, covering about half an acre of the park’s grounds.
Its branches are supported by gridded beams due to the age and number of blooms, so it resembles a massive umbrella!
It’s no wonder it has been a muse of numerous landscape photographers! Every year, the park organizes a big event in mid-April to celebrate the arrival of the wisteria season, which is often visited by millions of tourists.
Apart from this one, the Great Wisteria, the symbol of the park, Ashikaga Flower Park has more than 350 wisterias, with the wisteria tunnels being the most memorable displays among them.
These wisterias some in various colors, including pink, purple, blue, white, and lavender, and visitors can marvel at the displays like domes, pyramids, hillocks, arches, and a waterfall.
Ashikaga Flower Park is also popular due to the beautiful illumination of the garden at night. In 2016, it was chosen as the most beautiful night view in Japan.
Apart from the magnificent wisteria, this garden is the home of some other flowery delights as well, including roses, iris, hydrangeas, peonies, water lilies, Japanese flowering dogwood, lilies, rhododendrons, crape myrtle, lantana, and various herbs.
Therefore, it is always bursting alive with colors and scents!
