A swan allegedly died of a broken heart, after her unborn cygnets were killed by teenage vandals.
Last month, in Bolton, Greater Manchester, a group of teenagers threw rocks and bricks at a swan mother’s eggs. This week, the swan mother was discovered dead and the father had disappeared.
As said by some onlookers, the heartless vandals were aiming at the swan nest, and unfortunately, 3 of the 6 eggs were smashed. To add to this swan’s misery, she had previously been harassed by other animals, such as dogs, hens and ducks.
The father, who was struggling with stress, was driven away from the nest two weeks ago. And, as swans mate for life, it is known they can die of a broken heart when they lose their partners.
Experts explain that when they lose their loved ones, they go through the same grieving process as humans.
A representative of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals(RSPCA) said: “This is a really sad development and it is very upsetting to hear about the death of this poor swan.
We are investigating the previous distressing incident and we would urge anyone with information to contact our appeals line on 0300 123 8018. Swans, their nests and their eggs are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.”
A week before this incident, teenagers armed with catapults killed a swan and her three babies, near Eisey Footbridge in Wiltshire.
Since these incidents were shared, many Facebook users have been heartbroken, leaving comments and feeling sorry for these animals.
