Genius Company Installs Beehives In Your Living Room So You Can Help Save Them

Bees are disappearing globally, due to habitat loss and modern industrial farming methods. Being among the most important pollinators, as it is estimated that one-third of the food that we consume each day relies on pollination mainly by bees.

Additionally, honey and wax are two other important products that come courtesy of bees. As the state of their population becomes growingly alarming, people have started to seek innovative ways to find a solution.

Yet, have you ever thought you can alleviate this issue from the comfort of your home? What’s more, what if you could do so by decorating your living space?

Well, BEEcosystem has found a way, by creating their innovative wall-mounted observation hives. You can now mount these amazing beehives wherever there is a nearby window in your home.

Designers Dustin Betz and Mike Zaengle created the observation hives to give us the opportunity to personally contribute to fixing the bee population problem.

Betz explained:

“We feel the BEEcosystem hive can add tons of value to eco- and agri-tourism businesses. And the Ambassador Program will allow more of those businesses to purchase our product without having to have someone in-house manage the hive—this network will also help to educate the next generation of beekeepers, and greatly increase the reach of our social impact.”

Their hexagonal, honeycomb style is completely safe even for novice bee-keepers.

Co-founder Mike Zaengle adds that their product is suitable for residential, urban living:

“BEEcosystem works well for renters because it features a window exit unit that fits into practically any sliding window. There’s a tube that the bees crawl through to get outside to fly, then they return through it to get back to the hive. You don’t have to drill a hole in your wall; you just need to mount a bracket. It’s very non-invasive.

This will be the first display hive we know of that will ship with the colony of bees already installed. With other hives, the beekeeper purchases a package of bees that are delivered through the mail, and then pours them into the hive—which can be very intimidating for a first-time beekeeper! With BEEcosystem, your hive installation is simplified.”

They offer an opportunity to watch the hard-working insects creating honeycomb and beeswax while contributing to their survival.

The main goal of the product is to bring people and bees closer together and strengthen this bond. Unlike other indoor observation beehives, these ones are scalable, flexible, and come with a simple wall mounting bracket and a plug-in tube.

According to BEEcosystem’s website:

“From our design perspective, we wanted to create an observation hive that intentionally provokes meaningful conversations about honeybees, especially engaging non-beekeepers and non-agricultural experts. In deliberately differing BEEcosystem from existing styles of observation hives, we celebrate a fusion of old and new ideas in apiculture: an emergent hive form, with a familiar removable top-bar hive frame functionality.

Beginning in 2014, we prototyped and field-tested the expandable top-bar observation hive design for 2 years, overwintering in the 4-season climate of central Pennsylvania, USA, before beginning to sell the BEEcosystem hive commercially in Spring 2017.

With a slim wall-mounted profile that can be incorporated into nontraditional beekeeping spaces and new kinds of observation displays, each BEEcosystem unit or “HexHive” box contains six top-bar frames from which bees build foundationless comb.”
