Villagers Are Knitting Jumpers For Elephants To Protect Them From Near-Freezing Temperatures

Global warming is believed to be among the main reasons for the extinction of various species in the modern era. We witness dramatic climate changes, which cause great sufferings to numerous animals that live in the areas severely affected by these changes.

Yet, we can all do something to help them. Thus, villagers in India knitted super-sized colorful woolen jumpers for elephants in order to protect them from near-freezing temperatures.

Elephants are admired by numerous people, and they are highly emotional and intelligent. They have a sense of sight, smell, sound, and touch, and that is the reason why they can also feel and suffer from the freezing temperatures.

When the staff at the Wildlife SOS Elephant Conservation and Care Centre in the northern city of Mathura warned temperatures were approaching sub-zero at night, women started producing the garments.

This conservation center rescues elephants who have previously suffered chronic neglect and beatings from cruel handlers. It now houses 20 elephants rescued from illegal captivity, circuses, trafficking mafia, and exploited for street begging.

Kartick Satyanarayan, the founder of the center, says it is of high importance to save the elephants from the cold temperatures, since they are weak and vulnerable, and the abuse they have suffered made them prone to ailments like pneumonia. The cold also aggravates their arthritis, which is a common issue in these rescued elephants.
