75-Year-Old Volunteer Visits Animal Shelter Every Day And Naps With Cats

Even though not all of us love animals, there are people who simply adore hem, and even admit to loving them more than people.

Pets and their owners often have extremely strong and loving bonds. People who do not have a pet on their own can often be seen expressing their affection in numerous ways.  For instance, a man from Wisconsin spends the time of his afternoon naps in an animal shelter.

Namely, Terry Lauerman, age 75, goes to his local animal shelter in Green Bay daily, to take a nap with his loving cats.

Yet, the founder of the Safe Haven Pet Sanctuary, Elizabeth Feldhausen, explains that he actually had no intention of becoming a shelter regular and volunteer. He strolled casually into the shelter, months before the development of any kind of routine, with a cat brush in hand and a plan to pet some fluffy pets.

She said:

“He just walked in and started brushing. So eventually we told him he was an official volunteer and had him fill out our volunteer form.”

This made him visit the shelter regularly, and fulfill his cat-loving duties.

Lauerman visits this cage-free sanctuary every day, and stays there for about 3 hours, grooming the cats, or taking a nap.

Feldhausen says,

“He sleeps for about an hour, then he’ll wake up and switch cats.”

Lauerman enjoys his unpaid position, and even admits that “the brushing is as great of an experience for him as it is for them!”

Everyone in the shelter seems to like him. They are charmed by his daily nap routine, so they dedicated a Facebook post to him:

“We are so lucky to have a human-like Terry. Terry just came along one day and introduced himself. He said he’d like to brush cats. Eventually, it became every day. He brushes all of the cats and can tell you about all of their likes and dislikes. He also accidentally falls asleep most days. We don’t mind – cats need this! Terry is a wonderful volunteer.”

This warmed the hearts of viewers, and millions of people liked and shared this post. His routine raised awareness for adoption needs and reminded others of the power of love.

Feldhausen tells Scary Mommy that the shelter is amazed by the positive reactions to their post:

“Terry and I do not know what to think about all the attention. He’s just SO happy that his accidental nap is raising money for his loved ones, the cats.”

The post quickly went viral, and up until now, the shelter received around $20,000 in donations.

Even though Lauerman believes that this attention could hopefully bring about more donations to Safe Haven, he also wants to point out that he is not the only one who dedicated love and time to the animals in the shelter. He specifically praised another volunteer, named Paula.

Feldhausen commented:

“Who is what he considers the cat grandma. He wants to make sure the people who do what he does every day get credit too.”

We can definitely say that their efforts surely make everyone happy, especially the cats!
