The mass production of plastic rice is centered in China and leads to serious health issues. Namely, this all came as a consequence of the Wuchang rice which is really popular as it has a unique taste and pleasant smell. Moreover, it also twice more expensive that the normal kind of rice.
Hence, as the need for this Wuchang rice was rapidly growing, companies began to use the opportunity and produce fake rice for the same price.
Allegedly, the production of this fake rice lasts for more than four years, and it is recreated by mixing sweet potatoes, potatoes, and some dangerous toxic plastic.
Mixed thus, this fake rice has the same size and shape of the original rice, but after being cooked, it becomes hard due to the plastic it contains and is extremely dangerous for the health.
Furthermore, it has been found by an undercover journalist that companies in China actually combine small amounts of the real Wuchang rice with plastic rice, and spray it with a fragrance in order to imitate the original kind and in the end, they package it the same.
People believe that 800,000 tons of actual Wuchang rice are produced annually, while a devastating number of 10 million tons is sold. This shows that more than 9 million tons of the sold “Wuchang rice” is actually fake.
The Korea Times states that distributors claim that selling fake rice brings great profits, especially in the enormous quantities that are required on the market.
Namely, these companies have succeeded to sell this fake rice for more than 4 years without being stopped, until they began to distribute it outside China, in countries like Singapore, Vietnam, and India.
There is an investigation conducted by the National Food Authority of the Republic of the Philippines, which will examine plastic rice reports, and it will use a spectroscopy device to discover whether the rice is fake or not. They have also issued a warning.
In order to illustrate how dangerous it is, we can say that the consumption of three bowls of this fake “Wuchang rice” equals the consumption of a whole plastic bag, leading to numerous severe digestion problems, especially if eaten often.
Regarding the fact that most Chinese eat more than half a pound of rice on a daily basis, this becomes a seriously dangerous issue.
According to research, this rice leads to serious health risks linked to bisphenol A and a class of chemicals known as phthalates, often found in plastics. Bisphenol A is able to impede the functions of hormones, especially estrogen. In has been related to negative results on reproductive development in a few animal studies.
Moreover, phthalates are “plasticizers” found in numerous different products, and have been banned in the EU since 2005. They cause a hormone disruption, and especially affect testosterone.
Undoubtedly, we all have a significant quantity of phthalates and bisphenol A in the system, resulting from all the food in plastic containers we consume. Yet, the consumption of this fake rice will skyrocket the amounts of these dangerous chemicals in our body.
There have been no reports of this fake rice in the United Stated so far, but it is a fact that it has been exported and used outside of China. Therefore, it is still unclear if countries investigate the sources of the food prior to importing it.
