At her local shelter, an 89-year-old dog lover has knitted 450 coats and blankets for pups there.
The news was shared in an Instagram post by Dogs Trust, a 127-year-old charity whose goal is to find homes for dogs throughout the UK, which wrote that an 89-year-old local dog lover, Maisie Green, knits blankets and dog coats for Dogs Trust Basildon.
Green has hand-knitted a lot of sweaters and blankets for the dogs for years, and she says that she loves knitting and dogs, so she combined them in such a way. It took her 3 days to knit a blanket and one day to knit a doggy coat, but it kept her busy and allowed her to help the four-legged residents of the center.
The generous senior donates her knitted creations to the shelter three times annually. Her family drives her there and helps her unload each batch of sweaters and blankets, made for the adorable dogs she whole-heartedly loves.
She is one of the many volunteers who regularly help the shelter, which is the biggest dog welfare charity in the UK. It has a network of 20 Rehoming Centres across the UK (and now one in Ireland), and it cares for over 16,000 stray, unwanted and abandoned dogs annually. They have a non-destruction policy, and will never put a healthy dog to sleep.
In order to make their stay more comfortable, the Basildon Dogs Trust encourages locals to donate sweaters and blankets, and volunteer in the shelter, as everyone’s help is more than welcome.
