A young man and his father went on an auction to try and win back a land their family owned for years. There, all 200 Nebraska farmers present remained silent and did not place a bid, to help them buy back their family farm. 

The coronavirus has taught us that we can take nothing for granted. The crisis that accompanies it has affected numerous people.

However, a story of a surprising twist that has gone viral a few years ago can now remind us that if we work together, we can always come out as winners.

While its origins are a bit murky, the moral of this story emphasizes the good in humanity, something we truly need these days.

All of his life, David has been a farmer. His entire family are also farmers, and for the last several decades, they have been working together on a farm.

Yet, an ancestor had sold off their 80-acre farm to a relative who did not have their best interest in mind, and this left David and the rest of the family devastated. The whole ordeal was entirely legal, but it wasn’t any less painful for them.

They were not about to quit. Knowing the farming business very well, they were aware that sooner or later the farm would go on sale, probably on an auction. The family gathered all the money they had and decided to try and buy back the farm when the farm was put on sale again several years later.

On the day of the auction, when David and his father arrived at the farm, there were 200 other farmers already there.

They were devastated. Considering the competition and the little money they had, it didn’t look like they could buy back their farm.

Farming auctions work the same way as other auctions – the more people bid, the higher the price gets. Even if there were only a few others who would bid against them, David and his father would not be able to buy the farm back.

David and his father waited through the auction for their farm to be presented – they weren’t interested in any of the other properties at that time.

Their only desire was to get their farm back.

When the moment came, they made their bid and waited holding their breath … but silence prevailed. No one tried to outbid them, out of the 200 other men present!

And this was not because the land was not worth bidding for, as it certainly was!

It turned out that all of the other 200 farmers have made an agreement before the auction, not to stand in the way of David’s family, and to let them take back the farm.

David didn’t ask this from them, but they all kept to the agreement through the biding process.

The auctioneer put them on a test too, praising the land and luring them to bid for some time, but no one tried to take that chance.

They all remain silent and they let their fellow farmers take back their farm.

Stunned, the auctioneer called a break, and when they reconvened — three times — and each time, no one placed a bid.

In the end, he was forced to accept the decision of the group, slammed the hammer down, and sold the farm back to David and the family. And this time it became truly theirs.

David said:

“I’ve had two profoundly humbling days in my life. The first was the day my son was born. The second was that unforgettable day at the auction house.”
