Kaitlyn Nesbit uploaded a video to TikTok, showing five people sitting around a table in Maryland before a black bear joins them and is fed a peanut-butter and jelly sandwich.

Summer is the perfect time to get some fresh air, somewhere in the wild. Many families decide to spend a weekend or more in the woods, enjoying a picnic and some soothing walks in nature.

However, not anyone is prepared to welcome an uninvited guest out there! A family in Maryland was spending some quality time at a picnic when a wild black bear decided to join them, and the entire scene was caught on video!

On August 6, Kaitlyn Nesbit, 29, and her family were enjoying some cold beers at a picnic table near a cabin in Deep Creek, when a wild black bear approached them and joined four men and a woman at one of the tables.

Yet, what is even more surprising, the family did not panic, but remained calm!

Nesbit, who manages a bridal store, explained:

“This was a friend’s cabin and they said that the bear is always around and never really bothers them.”

One of the men grabs a loaf of bread and points his finger at the bear, indicating that the sandwich will be ready soon.  The bear slowly takes it from his hand, as another person starts to prepare a second sandwich to get in on the fun.

The other family members sit there and try to look unperturbed. One of them remembers to carefully hide their beers to make sure they will sip on them later.

Nesbit added:

“Some of our group are used to being out in the wild so we were all told to not make sudden movements and stay where we were. Most of us were scared to death and filmed from the deck but the brave tested their luck.” 

One man even dared to tap her on the nose, and got away with it!

Nesbit explained that “eventually, the momma just walked back into the woods unharmed”, but prior to it, the group is seen taking selfies with their dinner guest.

Yet, those who have seen the video are in disbelief!

Many people on social media have criticized the family for treating the bear so carelessly and for feeding her in such a manner.

Also, a law in Maryland forbids feeding wild bears, to prevent them from becoming overly reliant to humans for food and thus become a threat for residents.

Moreover, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources advises residents as follows:

“DON’T FEED IT! Scare it away. Make loud noises, bang pans, or yell. Seeing bears can be very enjoyable. However, having a bear in camp can lead to problems that will persist long after you have gone home. If a problem becomes serious, your safety and the bear’s safety may become jeopardized.”
