When was the last time you walked barefoot? When was the last time you enjoyed a walk in the sun?
“Earthing” is an ancient practice that people used to connect to Earth. Being close to Earth helps you get its energy. It may seem like a silly method, but it sure helps. Walking barefoot can give you a lot of benefits.
The power of Earth’s energy
Planet Earth has its own energy field, and in 1952, W.O. Schumann, German physicist and professor at the University of Munich, did an effort to find the evidence he needed.
To create his hypotheses, Schumann used the fact that when a sphere lies within another sphere, they create an electrical tension. The Earth is a negatively charged sphere set in a positively charged ionosphere, and the tension between them creates a charge. According to him, the Earth has a frequency of 10Hz.
In 1954, Schumann joined his forces with Herbert Konig, and found that the exact frequency is 7.83 Hz. Today, it’s known as the Schumann Resonance.
The Earth has a limitless supply of free and mobile electrons. It’s surface is electrically conductive, and the global atmospheric electrical circuit maintains its negative potential.
The essence of “Earthing”
Earthing describes the contact with Earth’s surface electrons through barefoot walks or conductive systems that bring the energy from the ground to the body.
The testing
Earth’s electrons have the power to relieve pain, improve sleep, thin blood, reduce inflammation and stress, and lower cortisol levels. This may also help in treating muscle soreness, while improving the parasympathetic systems (blood flow, respiration, oxygenation of the blood and pulse rate).
In these studies, the subjects walked barefoot outdoors and some were connected to grounded conductive devices. Most subjects had an improvement in their parasympathetic responses within half an hour.
Other studies confirm that this has a beneficial effect in the treatment of osteoporosis, glucose regulation and thyroid responses. K. Sokal and P. Sokal, cardiologist and neurosurgeon of a medical staff in Poland, conducted series of studies using a copper conductor in contact with the Earth. According to them, this may affect the physiological response.
The outcome
1. Osteoporosis
Experts used a copper plate applied to the lower extremities with a conductive wire attached to a grounding rod outside. They had an improvement within a night, and their concentration of minerals and electrolytes was lot better. Their calcium and phosphorus levels in urine and blood tests were low too.
2. Thyroid disease
Subjects diagnosed with thyroid issues had a decrease in free tri-iodothyronine and an increase in free thyroxin and thyroid stimulating hormone after a night.
Other benefits
Dr. Jonathan Kaplan, a foot and ankle specialist and surgeon at Hoag Orthopaedic Institute, provided some more benefits regarding the link between Earthing and feet:
1. Good position of feet
2. Better balance
3. Better body awareness of surroundings (that’s why small kids aren’t recommend to wear shoes when they learn how to walk)
4. Improved foot mechanics strengthens and aligns knees, hips and core
5. Prevention of exaggerated movements of your foot and ankle joints which gives enough strength and stability
6. Lower risk of bunions, hammer toes and other issues
7. Stronger legs and lower back
Do the right thing!
Here are some extra tips on how to “Earth” properly:
- Start of at a low pace to gain strength
- Do ankle exercise to build your balance
- Wear minimalist shoes
- Do yoga, pilates and other activities that require you to be barefoot
- Walk barefoot indoors first
You should also keep in mind of the ground. Rocky areas may hurt your feet, and wet areas are dangerous. Asphalt, wood, rubber, plastic, vinyl, tar or tarmac block Earth’s energy. You should walk on sand, grass, soil, concrete and ceramic tile.
Wash your feet after the earthing session to prevent infections.
Diabetics should be aware of few details:
- Walk on clean ground
- Wear minimalist shoes (no synthetic rubber soles!)
- Wash and moisturize your feet
Final words
Earthing has a positive effect on your overall health. That’s the only way to connect with Earth, and your body needs all the benefits from these sessions. Earthing is free, simple and it has an incredible effect on your body.
