I believe there is not a single person in this world who hasn’t heard of Bruce Lee, one of the biggest icons in cinema history. The ultra-popular Hong Kong American actor, filmmaker, and impressive martial artist has even invented a martial arts style, Jeet Kune Do.
His determination, willpower, and dedication made him one of the most influential martial artists of all time. However, apart from those skills, he was also a man of deep thought, a great philosopher and a diligent journaler.
Lee often wrote down his ideas on how to live life to the fullest, and since his death, numerous books on his philosophical thoughts have been published, like Tao of Jeet Kune Do and Words of the Dragon, to name a few.
This wise man pointed out the importance of self-knowledge, and the power of flexibility, adaptation, and change in life. He spoke of freedom from limitations as the only way to realize our true nature and potential.
Bruce advises that the cultivation of spirit, or non-action and silence, can be as valuable as action. Later in life, Lee maintains that the nature of life is a constant discovery and expansion, and emphasizes the need to look inward and take responsibility for one’s self.
Here are some of his valuable quotes:
1. Time is invaluable.
“If you love life, don’t waste time, for time is what life is made up of.”
2. Your thoughts attract your life.
“As you think, so shall you become.”
3. Go with the flow.
“Notice that the stiffest tree is most easily cracked, while the bamboo or willow survives by bending with the wind.”
4. Take responsibility for your mistakes.
“Mistakes are always forgivable, if one has the courage to admit them.”
5. Humility is a virtue.
“Showing off is the fool’s idea of glory.”
6. Let love be your driving force in life.
“Love is like a friendship caught on fire. In the beginning a flame, very pretty, often hot and fierce, but still only light and flickering. As love grows older, our hearts mature and our love becomes as coals, deep-burning and unquenchable.”
7. Be patient and calm.
“A quick temper will make a fool of you soon enough.”
8. Give your best in whatever you do.
“I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.”
9. Always be yourself.
“Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it.”
10. Don’t be afraid of challenges- they strengthen you.
“Do not pray for an easy life, pray for the strength to endure a difficult one”
11. The world does not revolve around you.
“Real living is living for others.”
