True love exists, and this Savannah couple is here to remind everyone of the importance of loyalty, honesty and respect.
The story of Billy and Nellie Jones will warm your heart and make you call the person you love. The Savannah couple has been making headlines for quite some time, and their birthday celebration attracted the attention of millions worldwide.
Billy and Nellie were born four days apart in 1920. They went to the same school and the community loved the high school sweethearts. Billy remembers the first time he met his gorgeous lady. He knew that she’s the love of his life.
“She was practicing for a play at Savannah High School on Washington Avenue. A friend of mine waved at her and spoke to her. I said, ‘who is that?’ He said, ‘That’s Nellie. She’s in my class, would you like to meet her?’ He turned the car around, took me back, and introduced me to Nellie.”
The sweet couple stayed together and survived the most desperate times. Billy and Nellie have spent the last eight decades together, going through the good and the bad together. They support each other in every possible way, and their love is still alive.
Today, Billy and Nellie have three amazing sons, six grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
Their 100th birthday was special. The family planned a nice celebration, but the coronavirus changed their plans. Well, there was a celebration. A slightly different celebration. Everyone followed social distancing guidelines and there were no problems.
The family honored Billy and Nellie with a beautiful parade. It was private and emotional. There were lawn chairs in the front yard, and Billy and Nellie watched the golf harts, bikes, and cars drive past their house. There were a lot of balloons and a big “Happy 100th Birthday Billy & Nellie” sign. So amazing!
Nellie looked really great, all dressed up for the celebration. Billy wore a special hat with a big sign of their milestone.
It wasn’t a big party, but Billy and Nellie enjoyed every bit of it.
“Very, very loved, for somebody to do all this work for us,” Nellie said. “I’m speechless, too, not speechless that they love me, but that somebody would go through all this trouble.”
Their loved ones did an amazing job. That’s how you celebrate great love.
An advice for the youth
Staying together for years requires loyalty, honesty, and a lot of effort. It’s more like growing up together.
“All I know is work hard, whoever you’re working for as an employee. And go to church,” Billy said.
Nellie was all about the love for the Lord. “Love the Lord,” the lovely lady said.
Commitment is such a wonderful thing and this couple is here to remind us that every milestone requires a lot of love and respect. Divorce is such a common occurrence these days, and we all needed something like this to motivate us to meet the next anniversary without even mentioning the word divorce.
“The same girl as a teenager in high school and marrying and staying with her for 79 years, can’t beat that.”
