Abandoned Dog With The Word “FREE” Written On Its Fur In Permanent Marker

Human negligence is believed to be a contributing factor to stray animals on the streets. All kinds of animal cruelty are a concern as it is completely wrong to inflict suffering on any living creature.

This cruelty might involve various actions, from depriving an animal of food, water, shelter, socialization or veterinary care to torturing, or killing an animal.

When a person takes on ownership of a dog, this means that the pet immediate becomes his responsibility. A pet owner is obliged to ensure the welfare of the animal.

Pets are a real treasure, but sometimes, owners stop caring for them and just leave them on their own on the streets.

This happened to a poor puppy found in May last year.

The lovely Lab-mix puppy was found in Yoctangee Park Chillicothe, Ohio. Yet, what rescuers immediately noticed was that the abandoned dog was written all over its body with a permanent marker.

The pup had the words “FREE”, “Good home only”, and “I am a gift from God” written on its little body.

To expose the cruelty the puppy has suffered, Brittany May from the Ross County Humane Society posted several photos of it and wrote:

“I usually try to contain myself with my work life and with what I see every single day, but this just tops it off! How are you going to dump your dog, and write FREE all over it in permanent marker! I just don’t get it! This is a whole new level of LOW!”

Fortunately, the puppy ended up in good hands, and the staff of the Ross County Humane Society named her Marvella.

Marvella received all the care she needed and the staff worked hard to get the marker off her fur.

Sarah Cantrell, office manager and adoption coordinator at the Ross County Humane Society, reported that he was healthy and did not suffer from heat exposure.

Soon, the cute puppy found her new forever home with her new loving owners Linette Wrightsel and her family.

Cantrell added that numerous people were interested in Marvella, and they approved the application of this family, and they adopted her.

Marvella’s previous owner, Kendra Stafford, has been charged with cruelty to animals, abandonment, and failure to license.

To defend herself, Kendra said that her landlord made her give up the dog, and after trying unsuccessfully to find her home over Craigslist and that the shelters were all full, she resorted to leaving the dog in the park with a sign.

Yet, as she couldn’t find a piece of tape, she used a permanent marker. She said that she regrets writing on the dog, “but it was all good intentions behind it.”

Yet, Ross County, the only shelter in the area, explained they have no record of Stafford reaching out to them with the dog, casting some doubt on Kendra’s story.

Fortunately, the story of Marvella has a happy ending.

Yet, there are still numerous animals that need our help, so Stafford added that they are a nonprofit and typically spend $278 on each dog that comes there, while adoption fees range from $130-$200.

The Ross County Humane Society wrote:

“Please remember that in any shelter on any given day there are dogs who have been given away as ‘free to good home’ and are awaiting their forever home, just like Marvella. Please support your local animal shelters and adopt, don’t shop.”
