If you are near South Carolina, visit the Diamond Hill Mine in Abbeville!
It is one of the primary crystal mines in the area, with six acres of land open to the public.
As explained on the website of the mine:
“Over millions of years, erosion has occurred to the southern part of the Appalachian Mountains which is one of the oldest mountain chains in the world. This has exposed a small 3-acre spot full of some of the widest variety quartz crystals in the world, known as Diamond Hill!
Some of the best Amethyst, Smoky, Skeletal(Elestial), Angle Plated, Iron & Manganese Oxide coated, Aura, and other crystals are found here! Other minerals including Beryl, Garnet, and Epidote have also been recovered!”
The mine is not ‘salted’, everything found on the spot comes from the mine, so nothing has been added to it, and it is entirely natural. Twice a year, an excavator digs up dirt and exposes new crystals for visitors to find.
Visitors can pay $20 and dig for a full day, and the site is open every day of the year, from 9 am until sunset. No booking is required, you’ll just have to sign-in between 9 am and 2 pm.
If you’d like to spend the night here, you need to call or email them previously.
You can set up camp on several spots. And you can use the hook-ups for RV’s, at no extra charge.
However, make sure you take food, water, and tools with you. You’ll need a shovel, a rake, a long screwdriver, a rock hammer, a sledgehammer, a pick, strong durable gloves, and containers for the treasures you’ll find.
Yet, things have temporarily changed recently. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, this was the newest announcement of the mine:
“We are open for digging!! Camping is not available at this time and we do request guests to wear masks in the parking area and observe social distancing!! If a trip during the week will work with your schedule, we are less busy those days!! We have moved a lot of dirt and dug some new areas in the smoky pit. Look for the feldspar crystals and you may find some gorgeous yellow smokies and druzy!! Hope to see you all soon.”
