In the last several years, the fashion industry has changed dramatically, after criticism for being a painfully exclusive industry. People no longer expect the same, and marvel at the diversity at the catwalks. They ask for varying skin races, of every body type and size, and beyond.
Seeing models with disabilities is no more a myth, and an increasing number of people are excited to welcome new individuals willing to break misconceptions and tear down barriers.
According to reports, a teen who appeared in Vogue magazine has become the first model with Down syndrome to pose for Gucci Beauty!
The 18-year-old became incredibly popular among followers of the Gucci brand on Instagram, having racked up over 819,000 likes.
Ellie Goldstein participated in the campaign for Gucci Mascara L’Obscur, which was featured online by Vogue Italia, and became the first model with Down syndrome to pose for the brand.
Goldstein’s portrait was shot by photographer David PD Hyde, who was selected after entering an Instagram scouting project called #theguccibeautyglitch. He explained that he aimed to “push the boundary of beauty by having different types of beautiful faces and bring them together as one unity,” and to show that “beauty is everywhere and exists in every person.”
Alessandro Michele, creative director of Gucci, explained that the mascara is designed specifically for “an authentic person who uses make -up to tell their story of freedom, in their way”, adding that they chose the name “because this word balances charm and mystery.”
Back in 2017, the girl from Essex, UK, signed with Zebedee Management, an agency that represents people with disabilities “supplying diverse models and offering sensitive representation”.
Since then, she has completed many projects, including campaigns for Superdrug, Vodafone, and Nike.
Ellie is currently studying performing arts and her family is ecstatic about the grand opportunities she gets in life.
Her mother, Yvonne, said:
“We’re all incredibly proud of Ellie and all the lovely comments she has had on Gucci’s Instagram.
She has always loved being in the limelight and in front of the camera, she’s very confident and good at taking direction.”
“It’s amazing!”

Ellie commented:
“I really enjoyed the modeling and loved wearing the Gucci dress. I’m really proud of the photoshoot and would love to be famous. I’m looking forward to modeling for other brands.”
The agency shared Ellie’s portrait on Instagram, explaining that it was also the “biggest liked post ever over on @gucci”.
Laura Johnson, of Zebedee, said that Ellie is “a wonderful person inside and out’, and added:
“Brands can no longer say that the “public don’t want to see” disabled models, as this Insta post proves otherwise!”
