A secretly recorded footage recently leaked from a German pharmaceutical research lab, and it shows monkeys screaming while being tortured, as well as other animals, including cats and dogs, bleeding, or in the process of dying.

Most of the graphic video focuses on the monkeys who can be seen restrained with large metal bars wrapped around their necks.

The disturbing scene was recorded between December 2018 and March 2019 inside of the “Laboratory of Pharmacology and Toxicology” or (LPT) in Hamburg, Germany. The facility was infiltrated by an animal rights activist who became employed to gain access to secrets like those shown in the video.

The name of the undercover “spy” has not been released due to their safety, but he was with the Soko Tierschutz and Cruelty Free International (CFI) animal rights organizations.

Other footage showed the animals confined to very small cages when the tests were not being conducted.

Friedrich Mülln from Soko Tierschutz described the appalling conditions, saying that the animals were even still wagging their tails when they were being taken to be killed, and the dogs were desperate for human contact.

He adds that the monkeys were treated the worst. The macaques breed of monkeys are small, relatively light primates, and they are often used for animal experiments at LPT. They are kept in cramped conditions in small cages, so many of them have developed compulsive tendencies and are seen going round in circles.

The footage released to the media lasted 8 minutes, and it revealed many animals being poisoned by various chemicals and drugs while lab workers investigated the safe dosage for humans.

According to the undercover worker, the animals were forced to eat or inhale larger and larger doses of particular chemicals so that lab workers could measure the effects.

Toxicology tests were carried out on beagles, monkeys, cats, and rabbits, the covert worker alleges. It has been claimed that the alleged tests were carried out for companies in Germany as well as worldwide. According to the animal rights activist, the animals were kept in horrific conditions, while dogs had pipes forced down their throats.

These tests reportedly caused various harmful symptoms, including vomiting, fever, weight loss, organ failure, internal bleeding, and respiratory distress. Most of the animals died during the experiments.

It has been claimed that the cats are often given up to 13 injections daily by untrained professionals and left to suffer.

The undercover worker added that the workers at the lab were often violent and abusive towards the animals, even outside of the brutal experiments.

According to Michelle Thew, CFI chief executive, this is a widespread problem at animal testing facilities. Their investigation has discovered appalling animal suffering, inadequate care, poor practices and breaches of European and German law.

Therefore, they are calling for LPT to be closed, and also demand a comprehensive review of the use of animals in regulatory toxicity testing in Europe, including the UK.

Police have been alerted to conditions at the lab and are investigating.

Two Belgian companies,  the Ghent biotechnology company Argenx, and a company in the Zwijnaarde Science Park, Ablynx announced that they could stop working with this laboratory, distancing themselves from the actions seen in the video, and claiming that its practices contradict their way of working.

Animal rights activist Carolin Iding has launched a petition for shutting down the lab on October 11 and has gained over 326,000 signatures so far.

Moreover, many are calling for a revision of Directive 2010/63 / EU on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes and intended to prevent such abuses.

Animal welfare associations, including the 30 Million Friends Foundation, ask for a ” review ” of this directive, which states that it “does not allow for the effective protection of animals used for scientific and educational purposes or a reduction significant of their number.

Nor does it give itself the means to support the development and implementation of alternative (non-animal) methods ”.
