Artist Imagines A Little Mermaid In The 21st Century And It’s Disheartening

In 1836, Hans Christian Andersen wrote The Little Mermaid, which has been reworked numerous times afterward.

The most popular version is the one by Disney in 1989, but now, a German Artist, Stephanie Hermes, popularly called s0s2, decided to visualize a XXI century mermaid.

Stephanie explained that her style is influenced by American cartoons from the ’90s with a touch of Japanese anime. This time, she decided to raise awareness for ocean pollution, so her creation “The Little Trashmaid” includes drawings that show the disheartening reality.

This artist said that she started drawing since she was little, and her parents encouraged her, so she is now becoming a freelance artist.

When a close friend suggested drawing a mermaid, referring to the Mermay Challenge, she started sketching, but wanted to replace the boring seashell bras, and asked herself:  “What would a mermaid wear these days? What would she find in the ocean?’

This triggered numerous ideas, and she thought about all the plastic laying or floating around our oceans. Stephanie decided to do something about the pollution issue and save our planet, as it doesn’t need us but we need it.
