Having difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep at night? If so, you may have tried taking sleep-inducing medicines (Nyquil, anyone?), which conked you out, but it left you with that Nyquil hangover in the morning. You may have even tried various types of homeopathic remedies to help you fall asleep or nixed coffee, to no avail.
Well, if sleep a blissful night of sleep is something that you dream of while you’re wide awake, dream no more. Thanks to this miraculous juice, you will be able to drift off to dreamland – and stay there for a good while – without any problem.
What’s the miracle juice? Probably not what you’re thinking; it’s cherry juice!
A study that was recently conducted at Louisiana State University found that drinking a glass of tart cherry juice two times a day can actually help you sleep a whole lot better. In fact, it can help you get about 90 minutes more of sleep each night. If you toss and turn all night long, you know how valuable an extra 90 minutes of sleep can be.
The Correlation Between Cherry Juice and Sleep
The researchers at Louisiana State University asked seven older adults who suffer from insomnia to participate in the study. The participants were asked to drink two eight ounce glasses of Montmorency tart cherry juice every day for a two week period.
After the two weeks of drinking the juice twice a day, the participants were asked not to drink the cherry juice for a period of two weeks. Following the non-juice period, the participants were served a placebo drink twice a day for two weeks.
Interestingly enough, at the end of the study, it was found that, when compared o the placebo, when the participants drank the cherry juice, they actually were able to get an average of 84 minutes more of sleep every night.
How is this possible? Well, it turns out that cherry juice contains melatonin and the amino acid tryptophan, two elements that actually induce sleep.
Frank L Greenway, the coauthor of the study and the director of the outpatient research clinic at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center at Louisiana State University explains that the red pigments in tart cherry juice actually contain an enzyme that helps to minimize inflammation and the break down tryptophan, which allows this sleep-inducing compound to last longer in the body. And, as it so happens, Montmorency cherries are very high in these compounds.
So, the next time you find yourself tossing and turning at night or staring blankly at the television screen until all hours of the morning because you can’t fall asleep, reach for a glass of tart cherry juice – and do so for several days.
You’ll be amazed by how much easier it will be for you to fall asleep and stay asleep. And wow, what a difference it will be to have a longer amount of undisturbed sleep.
